From Phone Booths to Blue Tooth

Barbara Bradford, Contributing Writer

Carriages drawn by horses take tourists for great rides to see some of the sights of New York City and Central Park. The tourists in the carriages and the others watching their journey probably never stop to think that people once rode in carriages pulled by horses because there were no cars, busses or airplanes.

Likewise, teenagers excited to purchase their first cell phone might be shocked to learn that there was a time when cell phones were only capable of making phone calls. Many of these youngsters expect to buy a cell phone with at least a built-in camera that produces and stores photographs and digital video recordings. The single function cell phone has followed the pay telephone booth into ancient history.

Consumer reports on cell phones usually highlight the weight of the phone and the functions available compared to others in the same price range. Ten years ago, mobile phones were bulky and provided a single function - phone calls from one person to another. Phones became lighter and brighter with each passing year.

The most desirable cell phones currently available weigh only a few ounces. Many lightweight cell phones now come with video recording devices and video graphics array (VGA) cameras. Important historical and world events are now often recorded by amateur photographers using a cell phone. These materials are often shown on international channels for the whole world to see on television or the internet.

World travelers can now purchase phones that will work in international locations in spite of the different systems used in other countries. Email access is also available on cell phones for those who want to stay in touch while in transit. Text messaging is now possible on most of the popular cell phones.

A personal digital assistant (PDA) does some of the jobs once performed by skilled secretaries. These magnificent devices are computers that can be held in one hand. Many busy people have become dependent on these lightweight computers, and there are some horror stories of unlucky souls who have become distraught when separated from their PDA.

The latest PDA incorporates the functions of a cell phone for improved convenience.  The BlackBerry® has become the most popular PDA, and the latest models incorporate the function of a cell phone. On the streets of a busy city, it is common to see several people tapping on the small keyboard of their PDA as they send wireless messages around the world in seconds. Contacts are kept in the memory for easy access to important telephone numbers and addresses. Users can view their incoming messages on clear screens in brilliant color. The web browsers on most of these devices allow easy access to all of the information available on the internet. Computers and other devices can now be operated without wires connected to an electricity supply due to the development of Bluetooth wireless technology.

Then on June 29, 2007, Apple® Computer, Inc. produced and distributed a device that had a unique name for special technology, the iPhone. Crowds lined up at retail stores to be some of the first to use this fabulous machine. The iPhone is more than a cell phone, and the name has significant meaning to those interested in cutting edge technology. The software is the work of brilliant engineers and designers because it allows users to control the device with just a simple tap. An iPhone weighs less than five ounces and combines the functions of several other devices into the package. The screen is wide and bright so users can view with clarity their own photos and websites on the internet with just a tap on the screen.

The facilities are magnificent. Users can surf the internet, make mobile phone calls and send text messages with the lightweight machine. When they are finished with those tasks, individual owners can take photographs and listen to the music stored in the memory of this tiny device. The batteries that power this magnificent machine are designed to last five hours while viewing video or talking on the phone.  The sturdy batteries will last up to sixteen hours when playing music.
