Tracking Teen Drivers

Mindy Seriah, Contributing Writer

Three months ago, our fifteen year old daughter received her learner’s permit.  This became one of the most anticipated times of her life and one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of ours.

Knowing she will have this restricted license for one year has taken away some of the edge as she is gaining a lot of supervised hours behind the wheel.  Her mistakes, or mental lapses, are at least quickly, and sometimes frantically, corrected by our guidance and experience.  But the reality is is that in nine months she will receive her operator’s license and become one of thousands of new drivers on the road.

With traffic accidents the number 1 killer of U.S. teenagers, there are several approaches to take to reduce the chance that your teen driver will become another statistic.

Watching Your Teen

Most of the major insurance companies offer Parent-Teen Driving Contracts that outline

your teen’s key driving responsibilities and the associated consequences should those responsibilities not be met.  Signed and dated by both the teen and parent, it covers speeding and tickets, crashing, drinking and driving, cell phones, music and other distractions, grades, time of day, number of passengers and use of seatbelts.

Other insurance companies, including American Family Insurance’s Teen Safe Driver Program, have begun offering in-car cameras or global positioning equipment to help parents monitor their teenager’s driving behavior.  Under Teen Safe Driver, a small device is placed behind the rearview mirror of your teen’s vehicle. It captures the view out the front, and into the interior, of the vehicle and saves data when activated by an erratic vehicle movement – extreme braking, cornering, and acceleration or if there is a collision.

The data is transferred wirelessly to an analysis center where it is reviewed and scored. Parents and teens log in to a secure Web site to view the video and tips for safer driving.

Parents can also receive a weekly driver report card that shows their teen’s performance compared to their peers.

Initial results have been extremely positive with, on average, a reduction in the frequency and severity of high risk driving events by more than 70% in the first six weeks.  Driver seatbelt improved from less than 40% to 100%.

DriveCam, the  San Diego-based company that developed the technology for the program, has found that, while initial data is limited, those participating in the program have had fewer crashes and injury accidents than expected based on national driving statistics.

American International Group (NYSE: AIG) insurance company launched a program in April called Mobile Teen GPS.  The GPS program sends parents an email or text message if the teen’s car exceeds pre-defined speed limits or strays too far from home or school.  The cost is $19.99 a month for two years for policy holders or you can purchase the device for $469 and join the program for another $29.99 a month.

The End Results

The use of technology that can be customized by the parent to alert them when their teen has exceeded a certain speed limit, driven a certain distance from their home, and even when the car as arrived at a specified address is catching the eye of many parents, ourselves included. We expect that our daughter, like most teens, will raise privacy concerns and trust issues as an argument against installing a GPS system.

Our counter argument will be the following facts:

1. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for American Teens - more than drugs, guns, or cancer.

2. Approximately 500,000 teenage drivers are injured or killed in auto accidents in the U.S. each year. (2005 data)

3. 1 in 7 teen drivers will have an auto accident during their first year of driving.

4. For every 20 teenagers in the US, one will die or be seriously injured in an automobile accident this year.

5. SPEED and LACK OF JUDGEMENT are the two most common factors involved in a teen auto crash with injuries.
